Double Troubled

before i go with a little comment (or review, if you insist) of the film i just watched, here's a little something else.

comments? as for me, i'm 167cm, and my vote goes to the one who's of the same height with me, when she's not wearing heels. and you must already know why, apart from our height, do i like her :)

contestant no.11 (kimberley?) deserves a special mention due to her profile: she listed athletics, basketball, volleyball, tennis and sports as her hobby. oh la la~

okay so it was the final day of Japanese Film Fest in KL, and i decided to watch Double Trouble, another film categorized as comedy (slash drama) in the list put up by GSC. i remember i glanced thru the little description given about the movie, but remember nothing about the details. so, like the day before, i entered the movie hall knowing nothing about the movie.

but unlike the day before, the first 10 minutes of the movie (in fact almost the whole of the movie) didn't show any pretty japanese girls in any of the scenes. the main role is a middle-aged average guy, and his sidekick is another ordinary guy. for a (long) while, the movie made me pause and think about the REAL reason why i wanted so much to attend this JFF.

however, it's not just that. for a while, i thought the movie was quite slow, and i'm having doubts about the validity of the movie being classed as a comedy (i didn't remember about it actually being a comedy PLUS drama movie), it's only after halfway thru (or more) that i can conclude that this is more a drama than a comedy. and when i got back to double-check, my conclusion was confirmed: it's both.

so after i set up my mind and told myself that this is not a comedy but a japanese drama movie, i found it easier to enjoy the movie, when before that, i wasn't really enjoying it, but was thinking more. it wasn't that straight forward, i have to admit. i had to force myself to like it. but at the end of they day, i enjoyed watching it. really.

there's a number of 'complicated' reasons why i liked it, and due to their complication, i think it's safe to say that this may not be everyone's cup of tea. the guy beside me, the same guy who was sat on the same chair the day before, left before the movie was even halfway. but emotionally, it was a very moving movie. very touching. if you're the sensitive type, and not necessarily jiwang, you'll understand this movie very well, and moved along with it.

the movie was also fascinating with the fact that it revolves very much on the traditional sense of Japan. in fact, it's very traditional, some can be lost if they're not well informed or just couldn't be bothered. for example, the main story, about the "momma's chorus" phenomenon (or maybe not so phenomenal... but it does have its own following), on whether it's just a fictional event or something very traditionally Japanese.

or the little story about the main actor's troubled affair with a barmaid, something that's actually quite common (having an affair, even at such an old age) among Japanese, and then followed with divorce etc. or how one character retold his story on liking his now 40-plus year old ex-teacher (japanese weird fetish), how the taxi driver changed jobs so many times but still the wife stays with him (japanese positive principle... when held on to), or how one woman's husband is so busy working the kid rarely see his dad etc

they're all very Japanese elements, and being set in a very traditional, small town in Japan, hence very original. the storyline is very simple, in a nutshell. it's just about a double booking. but the fact that it can be elaborated into an almost 2 hour movie; there are just so many things that are included in it, but without making any of it redundant. it's that beautiful.

but most of all, i think it's just a very emotionally moving story. and i like that. hey i do have feelings okay. so i can appreciate that. and the lead actress is all sorts of sweetness; there's nothing about her to dislike. if i were to go all cougar, i would like my 'girl'friend to be her.

but maybe you have to bear in mind that i have some kind of soft spot for Japanese drama, so anything about them can be emotionally moving to me, sometimes too much it borders around disturbing, their drama. but not this one. this time i like it just fine. eventhough i forced myself to like it in the beginning. but in the end it's all sweet and dandy.

argh, i can't get enough of JFF. i want to go to Penang to catch the JFF there. somebody, jom pegi Gurney Drive!
